On 1 November 2021 I entered the door of Harper Adams University as its new Vice-Chancellor and CEO. My first day in the job was my first day on campus. The entire selection process was done online as I was locked down in Melbourne, Australia throughout. I remember thinking as I unlocked my office, what is this place for?
It is a question I have asked myself in every organisation with which I have worked: KPMG, the University of Warwick, SERCO, Stephen A Schwarzman Education Foundation, Monash University and now Harper Adams University. The reason? When you know what an organisation is for, you understand its purpose. Not only does that clarify the job, but it also gives you momentum to attach to. Mobilising the best days, moderating the challenging ones. For me, purpose really matters.
